What Gets Lost When We Type Our Feelings
Turning to ChatGPT or another AI companion when you’re feeling stressed has become surprisingly common, and the appeal is easy to understand – it’s available around the clock, non-judgmental, and never tires of listening. But as a psychologist with over two decades of experience, I think it’s worth pausing to consider what AI can and can’t offer when it comes to mental health support. So much of meaningful therapeutic work happens in the space between words, and that’s something a chatbot simply can’t replicate.
