Understanding Autism Assessment Pathways
An autism assessment is a structured, multi-step process that helps make sense of how a child, adolescent, or adult experiences the world. At Newport Counselling & Psychology Service (NCPS), we combine observations, developmental history, cognitive and adaptive assessments, and information from family, school, or work to create a careful and practical picture that families, clients, and referrers can use.
Around 1 in 70 Australians are autistic, and rates of identification continue to rise, particularly in girls, gender-diverse young people, and adults.
Early, accurate identification can open doors to NDIS support, school adjustments, targeted therapy, and (perhaps most importantly) self-understanding.
Many people referred to us have spent years feeling different without understanding why. A careful assessment can provide clarity, validation, and a pathway forward.
Our goal is not simply to confirm or rule out a diagnosis. We aim to leave the individual, their family, and the referring clinician with a clear understanding of strengths, areas of need, and the supports that may be most helpful moving forward.
NCPS is a Medicare-registered psychology practice based in Newport in Melbourne's inner west. We provide neurodevelopmental assessments and ongoing therapy for children, adolescents, and adults, and welcome referrals from GPs, paediatricians, schools, and allied health professionals.
When to Consider Referral
Assessment may be helpful where there are ongoing questions about autism, particularly when someone experiences:
Differences in social communication or understanding social expectations
Restricted or highly focused interests and routines
Sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviours
Exhaustion or distress from masking or “holding it together” socially
Ongoing uncertainty despite previous mental health or learning support
Complex presentations where ADHD, anxiety, learning difficulties, or trauma may also be involved
Without careful differential consideration, interventions may be less effective or fail to address the underlying drivers of impairment.
Our Assessment Approach
Autism assessment at NCPS draws on a range of methods and sources of information, guided by DSM-5-TR and current Australian guidelines. It is always tailored to the individual and the referral question. A typical assessment includes:
A comprehensive intake interview exploring developmental, medical, educational, and family history
Standardised observation tools, most commonly the ADOS-2, administered by clinicians with research-reliable training. The MIGDAS-2 may also be used as a complementary clinical tool, particularly for adolescents and adults
Cognitive assessment (WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, or WAIS-IV) where it helps clarify learning profile or diagnostic presentation
Adaptive functioning assessment (such as Vineland-3) where required, particularly for NDIS-related evidence
Questionnaires completed by the client, family, and where appropriate, school or workplace
Consideration of other explanations or co-occurring conditions, including ADHD, anxiety, trauma, language disorders, or intellectual disability
A feedback session and written report that brings all of this together into a clear, practical formulation
Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Children (6–12)
Parent and teacher input is central, alongside observation of the child and their developmental history.
Adolescents (13–18)
The young person’s perspective becomes increasingly important, alongside input from parents and school, particularly around social life, school demands, and emotional wellbeing.
Adults
Assessment often involves looking back at developmental history, school reports where available, and patterns across work, relationships, and daily life. Many adults are referred after a child or family member receives a diagnosis, helping them understand patterns in their own experiences.

What our Reports Include
Our reports are designed to be clear, practical, and usable - not just diagnostic documentation. Each report includes:
A clear diagnostic formulation aligned with DSM-5-TR
A profile of strengths and areas of need across cognitive, social, communication, sensory, and adaptive functioning
Functional impact statements where needed for NDIS access
Practical recommendations for home, school, work, and community settings
Clear next steps for therapy, supports, and further referrals if required
After Assessment
Following feedback, we can support ongoing care through:
Therapy and support planning
School advocacy and adjustments
NDIS reports and documentation
Referrals to allied health and community services
How to Refer
We welcome informal conversations before referral to help clarify whether an autism assessment is the right next step.
Helpful Information to Include in Referral Letters:
Reason for referral and the specific questions you would like answered.
Developmental history (early language, social development, motor milestones)
Previous diagnoses, assessments, or screening results (SDQ, M-CHAT, AQ, RAADS-R, ADHD rating scales).
Relevant medical history, including hearing and vision.
Family history of autism, ADHD, learning disorders, or other neurodevelopmental conditions.
School reports, NCCD adjustments, or teacher observations
Any current mental health concerns or co-occurring presentations.
